Recycling centers are among the most frequented and most important service facilities in municipalities and cities. For most full-time working people, visiting the recycling center is a time-consuming affair. All you have left are peak hours. When asked whether the management of customer flows could be more efficient in times of digitalization, the Austrian startup Wiegon developed a fully automated answer. The project was now realized in Ischgl on around 2,600 m2 with the most digital waste management center in Europe. The recycling center in Ischgl handles waste volumes that vary between that of a village and a city. With around 1,600 residents and 1.6 million overnight stays per year, waste disposal in the community is a special case.

With 15 years of experience in the development of projects in waste management, he has played a key role in developing digital and autonomous recycling centers.

As a lecturer at the Vorarlberg University of Applied Sciences, he teaches students the basics of usability and user-centered development.

Wiegon is a competence cluster in waste management with its headquarters in the model region of Landeck in Tyrol. It combines the expertise of three companies of Tyrol working in the field of digitalization, automatization and waste management. The goal of Wiegon is to digitalize municipal recycling centres and increase the recycling rate and service for municipalities, employees and citizens. Wiegon designed the most modern recycling center in europe for the municipality of Ischgl in Tyrol and implemented it in autumn 2022. It is fully digitalized and allows citizens to drop off their recyclables autonomously 24/7. The project was awarded by the province of Tyrol/Austria and the Federal Ministry Republic of Austria, Climate Action, Environment, Energy, Mobility, Innovation and Technology.
