ANNOTATION

Recent amendments to the Waste Framework Directive by the European Union introduce new measures on waste hierarchy, producer responsibility, and recycling targets, aiming to recycle 55% of municipal waste by 2025, 60% by 2030, and 65% by 2035

However, before focusing on recycling, it’s essential to address underlying issues in waste collection processes. Effective planning and optimization of waste collection workflows are crucial. A significant challenge is a lack of efficient route and resource planning. Typically, waste collection companies operate with fixed routes based on addresses and schedules, but drivers often follow a familiar and convenient sequence of collection points, which typically is not the effective at all. In reality, effective planning might involve considering up to 50 variables beyond mere address-based routing, but including waste types, container sizes, vehicle capacities, time windows, traffic conditions, and more. Additionally, full control and traceability of the waste collection process are necessary. Without proper oversight, even with GPS equipment, much of the waste collection process remains unregulated.

This lecture will address the common challenges faced by waste collection companies and explore effective solutions through emerging trends and technologies. We will review practical examples, case studies, and technologies that have proven effective in various countries, and discuss ambitious targets for optimizing waste collection.
