ANNOTATION

The purpose of this presentation is to show how it is possible to start an advanced MSW collection system under difficult conditions, which include both political and financial challenges. The city of Mostar wasdivided during the last war, and after the war ended the city was left with two waste management companies each one in charge of their part of the city.

This political issue was going on for several years and it was the barrier for introduction of advanced MSW collection system with waste separation and recycling. In the beginning of 2024 the two companies have finally merged in to one and thus it was possible to start with waste separation. However, since the merge was still “fresh”, the operational challenges still remain beside the financial problems and lack of equipment. Despite all of this the desire to start with modern waste collection was bigger than all of these obstacles, so with the help of donators and consultants the system was introduced by the end of 2024.

During this process some small “innovations” have been introduced as a way to overcome lack of equipment, which will also be presented.
