Waste Management in Slovakia is undergoing a major transformation. Ambitious European Union recycling and landfill diversion targets are creating pressure to develop new infrastructure capable of diverting waste from landfills while ensuring environmentally, economically and energetically sustainable treatment of non-recyclable waste. The relationship between recycling and waste-to-energy is often presented as a conflict between two competing approaches. However, the experience of several European countries demonstrates that these are complementary components of an integrated waste management system.

The presentation focuses on the current state of waste management in Slovakia, its infrastructure gaps, and the challenges associated with meeting national and European targets. It will present examples from countries that successfully combine high recycling rates with the energy recovery of residual municipal waste, as well as discuss the role of Waste-to-Energy facilities within a modern circular economy framework.

The presentation will also introduce the Waste-to-Energy plant in Košice and the planned project for its expansion, which represents the largest investment in the Slovak waste management sector in the last 30 years. Through practical examples, the technical, environmental and energy-related benefits of modern Waste-to-Energy facilities will be demonstrated, including their contribution to reducing landfill disposal, generating energy and strengthening regional energy security.

The objective of the presentation is to provide an expert perspective on how to achieve the optimal balance between recycling, energy recovery and landfilling within the specific conditions of the Slovak Republic.

has more than 25 years of experience in environmental management, energy and waste management.

During his career, he participated in the implementation of environmental management systems at PSA Peugeot Citroën Slovakia and Jaguar Land Rover Slovakia.

He currently serves as Regional Director at ewia a.s. and Technical Director at KOSIT a.s., where he is responsible for the development of strategic waste management projects, including the construction of a new Waste-to-Energy facility in Košice. His professional focus includes Waste-to-Energy projects, circular economy solutions and the modernization of environmental infrastructure in Slovakia.

Ambiciózne recyklačné a skládkovacie ciele Európskej únie vytvárajú tlak na budovanie novej infraštruktúry, ktorá umožní odklon odpadu od skládok a súčasne zabezpečí environmentálne, ekonomicky a energeticky udržateľné nakladanie s nerecyklovateľnými odpadmi. Diskusia o vzťahu medzi recykláciou a energetickým zhodnocovaním odpadov je pritom často prezentovaná ako konflikt dvoch konkurenčných prístupov, hoci skúsenosti viacerých európskych krajín ukazujú, že ide o navzájom sa dopĺňajúce súčasti integrovaného systému odpadového hospodárstva.

Príspevok sa venuje súčasnému stavu odpadového hospodárstva na Slovensku, jeho infraštruktúrnym deficitom a výzvam spojeným s plnením národných a európskych cieľov. Predstavené budú skúsenosti krajín, ktoré úspešne kombinujú vysokú mieru recyklácie s energetickým zhodnocovaním zvyškového komunálneho odpadu, ako aj úloha zariadení na energetické zhodnocovanie odpadov v modernom obehovom hospodárstve.

Súčasne bude prezentované zariadenie na energetické zhodnocovanie odpadov v Košiciach a pripravovaný projektu jeho rozšírenia, ktorý predstavuje najväčšiu investíciu v sektore odpadového hospodárstva na Slovensku za ostatných 30 rokov. Na praktických príkladoch budú prezentované technické, environmentálne a energetické prínosy moderných zariadení na energetické zhodnocovanie odpadov vrátane ich úlohy pri znižovaní skládkovania, výrobe energie a posilňovaní energetickej bezpečnosti regiónov.

Cieľom prednášky je poskytnúť odborný pohľad ako nastaviť optimálnu rovnováhu medzi recykláciou, energetickým zhodnocovaním a skládkovaním v podmienkach Slovenskej republiky.

Dlhodobo sa venuje projektom energetického zhodnocovania odpadov, obehového hospodárstva a modernizácie environmentálnej infraštruktúry na Slovensku.
