Since water resources are widely contaminated by low concentrations of many artificial trace chemicals, additional treatments steps have been installed on drinking water production plants. This final treatment step is based on the GAC adsorption. The GAC application for drinking water production is a growing field in the Czech Republic and this is why also exhausted GAC processing will be a task of a great importance. The GAC reactivation eliminates waste production and follows the circular economy concept. However, the regeneration\/reactivation can be carried out under various conditions and it leads to various losses of the GAC. These losses must be than replaced by a new GAC from primary source. Our results indicate that it is possible to find specific optimal process conditions (especially temperature) for each GAC filter providing both sufficient reactivation and minimal GAC loss. Regeneration (500 &#8211; 550\u00b0C) \/ reactivation (550 &#8211; 900\u00b0C) process was tested in a pilot-scale facility based on batch rotary kiln with external heating. The real samples of exhausted GACs from the drinking water production plant were used for experiments under various conditions. As an example, the results for GAC made from hard coal which had been used for 3 years in waterworks filter will be presented. In this example, optimal regeneration temperature looks to be about 550 \u00b0C \u2013 it leads only to 1,6 % loss of the GAC (nearly only content of adsorbed organics from the water) and about 90-95 % restoration of the sorption properties.
