This paper provides a comprehensive answer by examining the energy utilization of waste in Slovakia from the perspective of the country’s largest heat supplier, MH Tepl\u00e1rensk\u00fd holding (MHTH). The decarbonization and diversification of district heating (DH) systems require a transformation of the fuel mix, where local waste also plays a pivotal role.<\/p>\n

However, when analyzing the options for the off-take of waste for the needs of heating plants in Slovakia, we encounter a technological and capacity mismatch: while the market supply of solid recovered fuels (SRF) is high due to the imminent mandatory mechanical-biological treatment before landfilling, the actual capacities of the heating sector for their immediate processing are currently limited. Therefore, this paper provides an overview of current and future capacities. It points out that although MHTH is actively preparing specific development projects (such as the dedicated SRF boiler in \u017dilina), the pace of their broader implementation largely depends on the setup of support mechanisms. In this context, an important space opens for professional discussion regarding subsidy schemes, as unlike in the neighboring Czech Republic, the current conditions of the Modernization Fund in Slovakia do not yet provide financial support for the construction of boilers designed for the energy recovery of SRF.<\/p>\n

Despite these economic challenges, integrating these sources into MHTH networks remains crucial. In addition to the potential of SRF and the integration of waste heat from WtE facilities, biomethane\u2014frequently produced from biodegradable waste\u2014is an important decarbonization fuel for the holding. Given the growing number of biomethane stations in the Slovak Republic, this solution represents a highly relevant pathway to decarbonizing not only our gas infrastructure but also the district heating sector.<\/p>\n

Through case studies from MHTH operations in Bratislava, Ko\u0161ice, and \u017dilina, the paper illustrates the transition from strategy to real-world practice. It shows that such synergy allows waste-to-energy sources (like WtE plants) to operate in a full, high-efficiency combined heat and power (CHP) mode, helping heating plants meet the strict European criteria of “efficient” DH systems. The result proves that the energy recovery of non-recyclable waste (whether thermal or biological) is the logical conclusion of the circular economy. Pri anal\u00fdze mo\u017enost\u00ed odbytu odpadov pre potreby tepl\u00e1rn\u00ed na Slovensku v\u0161ak nar\u00e1\u017eame na technologick\u00fd a kapacitn\u00fd nes\u00falad: k\u00fdm ponuka tuh\u00fdch alternat\u00edvnych pal\u00edv (TAP) na trhu je vzh\u013eadom na bl\u00ed\u017eiacu sa povinnos\u0165 mechanicko-biologickej \u00fapravy pred skl\u00e1dkovan\u00edm vysok\u00e1, re\u00e1lne kapacity tepl\u00e1renstva na ich bezprostredn\u00e9 spracovanie s\u00fa zatia\u013e obmedzen\u00e9. Pr\u00edspevok preto poskytuje preh\u013ead s\u00fa\u010dasn\u00fdch a bud\u00facich kapac\u00edt. Priamo poukazuje na to, \u017ee hoci MHTH akt\u00edvne pripravuje konkr\u00e9tne rozvojov\u00e9 projekty (ako dedikovan\u00fd kotol na TAP v \u017diline), tempo ich rozsiahlej\u0161ej realiz\u00e1cie do ve\u013ekej miery z\u00e1vis\u00ed od nastavenia podporn\u00fdch mechanizmov. V tejto s\u00favislosti sa otv\u00e1ra d\u00f4le\u017eit\u00fd priestor na odborn\u00fa diskusiu o dota\u010dn\u00fdch sch\u00e9mach, ke\u010f\u017ee na rozdiel od susednej \u010ceskej republiky, aktu\u00e1lne podmienky Moderniza\u010dn\u00e9ho fondu na Slovensku zatia\u013e nepo\u010d\u00edtaj\u00fa s podporou pre vybudovanie kotlov na energetick\u00e9 vyu\u017eitie TAP.<\/p>\n

Aj napriek t\u00fdmto ekonomick\u00fdm v\u00fdzvam je snaha integrova\u0165 tieto zdroje do siet\u00ed MHTH k\u013e\u00fa\u010dov\u00e1. Okrem spom\u00ednan\u00e9ho potenci\u00e1lu TAP a integr\u00e1cie odpadov\u00e9ho tepla zo zariaden\u00ed ZEVO, je pre holding v\u00fdznamn\u00fdm dekarboniza\u010dn\u00fdm palivom biomet\u00e1n, \u010dasto produkovan\u00fd z biologicky rozlo\u017eite\u013en\u00fdch odpadov. Vzh\u013eadom na narastaj\u00faci po\u010det biomet\u00e1nov\u00fdch stan\u00edc v SR predstavuje toto rie\u0161enie vysoko aktu\u00e1lnu cestu k dekarboniz\u00e1cii nielen na\u0161ej plynovej infra\u0161trukt\u00fary, ale aj tepl\u00e1renstva.<\/p>\n

Na pr\u00edpadov\u00fdch \u0161t\u00fadi\u00e1ch z prev\u00e1dzok MHTH v Bratislave, Ko\u0161iciach a v \u017diline pr\u00edspevok ilustruje prechod od strat\u00e9gie k re\u00e1lnej praxi. Ukazuje, \u017ee tak\u00e1to synergia prin\u00e1\u0161a zdrojom tepla z odpadov (napr. ZEVO) mo\u017enos\u0165 fungova\u0165 v re\u017eime vysoko\u00fa\u010dinnej kombinovanej v\u00fdroby elektriny a tepla a tepl\u00e1r\u0148am plni\u0165 pr\u00edsne eur\u00f3pske krit\u00e9ri\u00e1 \u201e\u00fa\u010dinn\u00fdch\u201c s\u00fastav CZT. V\u00fdsledkom je d\u00f4kaz, \u017ee energetick\u00e9 zhodnocovanie nerecyklovate\u013en\u00e9ho odpadu (\u010di u\u017e termick\u00e9 alebo biologick\u00e9) je logick\u00fdm koncom obehov\u00e9ho hospod\u00e1rstva.
